By the year 2040, the Diagonal Highway between Boulder and Longmont is expected to see a 25% increase in vehicular traffic. Current Dangers for Cyclists on Hwy 119
Highway 119 (the Diagonal Highway) in Colorado is considered one of the state's most dangerous roads for cyclists due to high-speed (60-70 mph) traffic, high volume, and previous lack of physical separation between cars and bikes. Despite being a major commuter route, it has seen 61 cycling crashes since 2010, and sadly the fatal 2023 death of 17-year-old cyclist Magnus White.
Our vision for a successful Hwy 119
The CO 119 Safety, Mobility project will make improvements to the corridor, resulting in safer, faster, and more reliable travel for all modes of transportation, including pedestrians, bicycles, buses, a train, and automobiles. A key aspect of this success will be the implementation of a separate bicycling lane, ensuring cyclists have a safe and dedicated path.
